In early 2002, a bag containing thirty-five videotapes was discovered in a garbage container on the streets of São Paulo by a telephone technician who spotted them during his work time. The size of the bag grabbed his attention and after he saw the tapes inside, he took them home; they looked almost new and perhaps he could reuse them. Little did he know, his discovery would lead to the imprisonment and conviction of one of the most respected doctors in Brazil at that time.

Born in 1954, Eugênio Chipkevitch is a Ukrainian naturalized citizen of Brazil. He graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of São Paulo, one of the most renowned universities in Brazil, and became known in his field by working with adolescent medicine. He wrote books and articles about the subject and had his name included in the ranking of the 2.000 most important scientists of the 20th century.

The worker who found the tapes gave two of them to the two biggest TV networks in Brazil, while the others he handed to the police. He later said he had seen a boy about 15-year-old throwing the tapes into the garbage container.

On the evening of March 20th, 2002, a traditional show aired an excerpt of the footage for the first time. Without a name, they looked forward to identifying the unknown man and his victims.

The tapes contained more than fifteen hours of sexual abuse. The victims were dozens of boys ranging in age from 8 to 17, who would be asked to take their clothes off and lie on a stretcher. Before the abuse started, they would be sedated.

The doctor would then undress and with his camera strategically positioned on a tripod, he would touch, kiss, and engage in sexual activities with the unconscious children.

Parents would be asked to stay in the waiting room as Chipkevitch sedated and sexually abused their children next door. They were also told the sedative caused hallucinations and therefore their sons could report seeing things that were not true.

Upon the exhibition, a woman recognized the doctor and spoke to the police. Eugênio Chipkevitch was arrested and charged with indecent assault and corruption of minors.

Chipkevitch had been abusing his patients for at least six years when the tapes were ultimately found. The oldest footage was reported to be from August 1995.

“My life is over,” stated Eugênio Chipkevitch when arrested.

Investigators received an anonymous call from an alleged male prostitute who claimed to have met the doctor in an apartment he owned in downtown São Paulo. Besides him, other young men would also frequent the apartment with Chipkevitch three days a week, the janitor said. Days before, Chipkevitch had been to the apartment and carried out a videotape and tapes.

Eugênio Chipkevitch confessed to being the man in the tapes and in 2004 he was sentenced to 128 years in prison, later reduced to 114 years. He has been serving his sentence in a prison for sex offenders in Sorocaba, São Paulo.
